Why it matters

The Canopy Fire Risk You
Cannot Afford to Ignore

Your canopy is the highest-risk component in your commercial kitchen. It collects more grease than anywhere else, it is the first checkpoint in every health and fire inspection, and it is where ignition happens.

Grease Ignites in Seconds

A grease-saturated canopy can reach ignition temperature in seconds during a flare-up. Once lit, fire travels through your entire exhaust system - often reaching the roof before suppression activates. Grease-laden canopies are the leading cause of commercial kitchen fires in Australia.

Leading cause of kitchen fires

Inspectors Check Here First

Your canopy and filters are the first checkpoint in every health and fire inspection. Visible grease on surfaces or filters is an immediate violation - resulting in a failed inspection, formal notice, and potential forced closure until rectified.

Visible to every inspector

Insurance Can Void Your Claim

If a fire starts and you cannot produce a current compliance certificate, your insurer can deny the claim. The average commercial kitchen fire causes $75,000+ in damage. A compliance certificate costs a fraction of that risk.

What Professional
Canopy Cleaning Does

Most kitchen staff clean what they can reach. Our technicians clean everything - including the hidden grease that inspectors find and fires start in. Every component, every surface, every collection point.

Without professional cleaning

  • Hidden grease accumulates out of sight
  • Filters block airflow and trap heat
  • No documentation for inspections or insurance
  • Compliance certificate invalid or absent

After Grease Busters cleans

  • Every surface, filter and baffle degreased
  • Full airflow restored, heat properly extracted
  • Before-and-after photos and service report provided
  • Compliance certificate ready for any inspection

What's included

Every Component.
Nothing Left Behind.

We remove, clean, degrease, and reinstate every part of your canopy system. Here is exactly what our technicians work through on every visit.

Filters & Baffles

All filters and baffles are removed, fully degreased, and reinstalled. We clean every slot, mesh surface, and baffle channel. This is typically the highest-grease component and the one inspectors check most closely.

Canopy Interior & Plenum

The interior and plenum chamber above is where the most dangerous hidden grease collects. Most kitchen staff never see this area. Our technicians fully degrease every surface in this critical zone.

Hood Exterior & Visible Surfaces

Customer-facing and staff-visible canopy surfaces are cleaned to a professional standard. Grease drips, surface build-up, and staining removed. Your canopy looks the part as well as being safe.

Grease Collection Points

All grease traps, collection cups, and drainage channels are emptied and cleaned. Blocked collection points are a common secondary ignition source - we clear them completely and dispose of grease off-site.

Ductwork Connection Point

The accessible section where your canopy connects to the duct run is cleaned and inspected. Grease accumulates heavily at this junction. We identify any build-up that requires duct cleaning attention.

Full System Inspection

Every service includes a condition assessment of your canopy - checking for damage, wear, leaks, or compliance issues requiring attention before they become a more serious problem.

Every service also includes:

  • Compliance certificate accepted by all QLD and NSW councils, fire services, and insurers
  • Before-and-after photographic report documenting every area serviced
  • Written service report with any recommendations or follow-up notes
  • Grease disposal handled - nothing left behind on site
  • Scheduled reminder for your next service due date

Grease build-up is often invisible from floor level. These images show what accumulates inside canopies and filters during normal kitchen operation - and what our technicians remove every single visit.

Canopy cleaning questions

Everything You Need
To Know

Common questions from commercial kitchen operators about canopy cleaning, compliance, and what to expect.

  • How often does a commercial kitchen canopy need to be cleaned?

Under AS/NZS 1668.1 — the Australian standard governing commercial kitchen exhaust systems — cleaning frequency is determined by cooking volume and type:

Every 3 months — high-volume operations running multiple meal services daily, such as busy restaurants, hotels, clubs, and fast food operations.
Every 6 months — medium-volume kitchens operating one main meal service per day.
Annually — low-volume operations such as cafes, corporate kitchens, and occasional-use facilities.

Most insurers require a minimum of six-monthly cleaning to maintain policy compliance. We assess your specific operation and recommend the right schedule.

  • What do health inspectors check when they inspect a canopy?

Your canopy is the first checkpoint in any health or fire safety inspection. Inspectors look for visible grease on canopy surfaces, filters, and baffles — any visible accumulation is an immediate violation. They also check for clogged filters restricting airflow, grease overflow in collection cups, and evidence of regular professional cleaning via a compliance certificate on file.

A compliance certificate from a qualified technician is the most effective way to satisfy an inspector before they even begin examining the canopy physically.

  • Can we clean our canopy ourselves, or does it need to be done professionally?

Basic day-to-day filter maintenance can be done in-house. However, full compliance cleaning must be done by a qualified professional for three reasons:

First, professional technicians access areas staff cannot safely reach — the canopy top, internal plenum, and upper ductwork connection points. Second, only a qualified specialist can issue the compliance certificate your insurer, council, and fire authority require. Third, DIY cleaning will not satisfy an inspector and may void your insurance policy if a fire occurs.

  • Do you remove the filters during cleaning?

Yes. All filters and baffles are removed for deep cleaning and full degreasing, then reinstalled once clean.

Important note: We are a cleaning service, not a filter replacement service. We restore your existing filters to a clean, serviceable condition. If a filter is damaged and replacement is needed, we will advise you and can point you to the right suppliers.

  • How long does a commercial canopy clean take?

Most canopy cleaning visits take 2 to 4 hours depending on canopy size, number of filter sections, and level of grease build-up. We schedule most work outside your trading hours - early mornings, late nights, or during closed days - so your operation is not disrupted.

  • What is AS/NZS 1668 and does my kitchen need to comply?

AS/NZS 1668.1 is the Australian and New Zealand Standard for mechanical ventilation and fire and smoke control in commercial buildings, including kitchen exhaust systems. It sets the legal requirements for cleaning frequency, system maintenance, and documentation.

All commercial kitchens in Queensland and NSW must comply. Compliance is enforced through health inspections, fire authority audits, and insurance requirements. A compliance certificate from a qualified technician confirms your system meets the standard after each service.

  • Do you service canopies outside Brisbane?

Yes. We service commercial kitchens across South East Queensland and Northern NSW, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, and surrounding areas. Technicians are locally based in the communities they service.

If you are unsure whether your specific location is covered, call us on 1300 439 019 or submit a quote request and we will confirm.
